On Thursday, October 11, 2018,  Mrs. Maxwell’s Washington Academy students worked with Mr. Stalter’s and Mrs. Stokem’s second grade students to garden lettuce.

Last year, the District received an agriculture grant from Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner, who donated ‘24:45 Super Grow Harvest Racks’ to agriculture classes; allowing students to grow vegetables and herbs from seeds in 18 days.

In an effort to spark an interest in sustainable agriculture at a young age, the high school shared one of these growing racks with the elementary students. Second grade classes will water and grow the lettuce in their classrooms. Once grown, students will enjoy the fruits of their labor with their peers at a salad party.

Our District is one of the 3 local schools with this super grow system. The program is an initiative to bring back agriculture programs to schools and teach future generations of American sustainable agriculture.
